Iridology and Why I Don't Believe In It

One of our customers asked if I know of anyone who can look into your eyes and tell you what's wrong with you. I told him I didn't know anyone but even if I did I don't recommend anyone goes to these kinds of "doctors".

Since owning a spice and herb shop, questions like these have been a common occurrence. Practices like homeopathy, reflexology, dowsing and water witching are not practices that are of God. If you disagree, I challenge you to investigate any of these practices and compare it to God's Word.

Galatians 5:19-21 says this:

"Now the works of the flesh are manifest, which are these; adultery, fornication, uncleanness, lasciviousness, idolatry, witchcraft, hatred, variance, emulations, wrath, strife, seditions, heresies, envyings, murders, drunkenness, revellings, and such like: of the which I tell you before, as I have also told you in time past, that they which do such things will not inherit the kingdom of God."

These things are very serious and I too often hear people say, "Well, I don't know how it works, but it works!" It may work for a time but more often than not, these people are never truly healed. The problem doesn't go away completely or it shows up in some other part of the body.

Iridology was invented entirely by Ignatz Peczely, a Hungarian physician who first published his ideas in 1893. The following description comes from the book The High Cost of Holistic Healing by Dr. Nolan Byler:

"...a method of testing in which a practitioner obtains a diagnosis by examining your irises, the colored parts of your eyes. There is usually a huge eye chart on the wall with two concentric circles dividing the iris into three additional circles. Sixty radial divisions go out like the spokes of a wheel. That divides the three sections by sixty, so you have 180 little blocks in the iris on the chart. The iridologist looks for a dark spot in a certain area of your iris and compares the location with the chart. The spot corresponds with a certain part of your body that is diseased."

Dr. Bernard Jensen, who is called the pioneer of iridology in the US, is well known for his involvement in New Age healing and reincarnation. He says, "Iridology is effective only through faith in the intuitive or psychic powers." The Bible says, "And have no fellowship with the unfruitful works of darkness, but rather reprove them." Eph. 5:11

Let us remember that God is the Great Physician and He is the giver of life and He can heal us or He will call us to eternity. When you face a sickness or disease, look first to Him and prayerfully ask for His guidance.

Here is a great artlcle by Stephen Barrett, M.D. on iridology and studies that have been done.

**On a side note: if iridology claims every part of the eye represents a part of the body and reflexology claims that parts of your hands and feet are linked to parts of your body, which one is right?
