Several species of willow are used to produce willow bark herb, Salix alba, S. Fragilis, S. daphnoides and S. purpurea. All contain adequate levels of the important constituent, salicin, to allow their use as the herb.

Salicin was isolated and synthesized into acetylsalicylic acid in the 1850s and eventually marketed as aspirin in the late 1890s by Frederich Bayer & Co.

 

To prepare as a tea, pour 8 oz. boiling water over 1 Tbsp. of herb. Cover and steep 3-5 minutes, strain and serve immediately.

Safety Guideline: Use in persons with sensitivity to aspirin or other salicylate-containing drugs is cautioned. Use in persons with G6PD deficiency (a hereditary disease also known as favism) is cautioned.
